Christian Education Degrees

Christian Education may take on various roles at churches: First, every church offers small group Bible studies to help build up the body of Christ. Some call this Sunday School, others offer Community Groups at church members' homes, others meet in restaurants or other public places to study the word of God in depth. Jesus set the example for us by setting down with people and teaching them (John 8:2; Luke 20:1; John 7: 14; and many more.) In fact, Luke 19:47 says, "Every day He was teaching in the temple complex." Clearly, Christian education is an important part of the ministry. The person entrusted with the responsibilities for administering the Christian Education programs of a church must select and empower teachers capable of delivering the instruction at a level appropriate to the maturity of the believers participating. Paul understood that complex doctrine could only be understood by mature believer, not by those who must be fed on the "milk" of the word first. Instruction must be tailored to the level of spiritual maturity of the group being taught. As such, the groups should be organized so that those who are new believers are presented foundational instruction, while those who are mature believers engage in study of the word that is in-depth and expository. In addition, the groups should be organized by age, which also is a factor in the education equation.

Christian Education can also expand to include elementary education, middle school, and secondary education of youth. This may be where a church hosts a group of home schooled families to provide unity and shared instruction, as well as fellowship between students and parents alike. At many of the larger churches, it may take the form of a Christian School that shares its campus with the church. This, also, can be an important part of Christian education, as we are admonished to bring up our children in the training and instruction of the Lord (Ephesians 6:4).
